Student and Alumni Services

Communication Career Services (CCS) is available to all students and alumni of the UT College of Communication. However, only students and alumni registered with CCS are eligible to take advantage of CCS resources and services. As CCS is funded through student fees, alumni wishing to register must pay a renewable registration fee.

Registration Procedures

To register with CCS, go to http://communication.utexas.edu/ccs/, click on “Create Student Account,” and follow the instructions. You will be directed to fill out your CareerSource user profile. After you have completed all required fields and submitted the profile, your registration with CCS will be complete.

Alumni must either pay the applicable fees online or in person in the Career Services Office, CMA 3.102. Once payment has been received, you will be emailed instructions to login to CareerSource and complete your user profile.

Career Advising

To schedule an appointment for one-on-one career advising, call or come by the CCS office. You must be registered with CCS to schedule a career advising appointment. Career advisors are available to assist you in exploring your career options, with the the job/internship search process, and as you consider law school, graduate school or other additional education. Drop-in career advising is available during the fall and spring semesters. Contact CCS for the drop-in advising schedule.

Resume and Job Search Letter Assistance

Career advisors are available by appointment and during drop-in advising to CCS registrants for one-on-one resume and cover letter critiques and advising. Registrants must have a hard copy of the documents ready for review.

Job and Internship Postings: CareerSource, AccessUT, Web-based Resources by Field

Each year more than 12,000 job and internship opportunities are posted to CareerSource and AccessUT! Summary information on job and internship posting is posted to the CCS blog – HireStandards – and e-mailed to CCS registrants weekly. Both CareerSource and AccessUT are searchable online database containing job and internship opportunities. Lastly, CCS maintains links to many web-base job search databases and resources. These resources can be found on the CCS home page in the “Resources by Field” section.

CCS Social Media: The HireStandards Blog, Facebook, LinkedIn & Twitter

In addition our website and traditional email communication, CCS offers a variety of social media communication options for students wishing to stay informed about career services and recruiting events. In addition to our blog, HireStandards – Not So Random Advice and Information on Life After College, CCS has a Facebook Fanpage, a LinkedIn Group and a Twitter account.

On-Campus Recruiting

Each year, CCS hosts up to 50 employers who interview students for a wide range of entry-level positions and internships. Review the online CCS Calendar, and the Interviewing Schedules and Events sections of CareerSource for upcoming interviewing opportunities, information sessions, application deadlines, and interview dates.

Communication Job & Internship Fairs, Other Career Fairs & Graduate School Fairs

Communication Job & Internship Fairs are held each year during the spring and fall semesters. Typically, 50-75 employers attend these events to meet, recruit and interview communication students and alumni for job and internship opportunities. The Job & Internship Fairs also offer the opportunity to network with representatives from various employers. The University’s annual Graduate and Professional School Fair is held during the fall semester. Coordinated by the Career Exploration Center, this fair attracts graduate and professional school recruiters from across the country. Review the online CCS Calendar or CareerSource for information on upcoming Communication Job & Internship Fairs and other career and graduate/professional school fairs on the UT campus and in the community.

Career Exploration Programs & Grants

CCS offers a variety of different programs and financial grants to help students explore and develop their career goals. Career Development Grants are offered each fall and spring semester to communication students active in communication student organizations for career development activities. Each spring semester, communication students who wish to pursue summer internships in the music industry in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York City, Miami or Nashville can apply for financial assistance through the Wofford Denius Music Industry Internship Program. Other programs endorsed or supported by CCS include the UT in DC: Semester in Washington, DC program, the New York Texas Exes’ NYC Seminar, the DC Texas Exes’ Welcome to the Beltway: Washington DC Seminar, and the UT Semester in Los Angeles Program.

Career Opportunities and Job Search Information Handouts

Informational handouts are available to provide students with general job search guidance. Handouts include guidelines for resume writing, job search correspondence, interviewing, applying to graduate school, informational interviewing, job offer evaluation & salary negotiation, working/interning internationally, and career opportunities in advertising, communication sciences & disorders, communication studies, consulting, journalism, public relations, radio-television-film, and public service & government.

Alumni Employment Data

The annual alumni employment survey collects employment information on College of Communication graduates six months after graduation. The Employment Reports provide general employment information on the College and specific employment information for graduates in each of the College's six majors. Employment Reports are available in the CCS office and can be downloaded from the CCS web site.
