Overview
Since its early beginnings in 1928, Aarhus university has provided both the Danish and international communities with more than 42,000 graduates, and has left its own special mark on the city of Aarhus, the Danish society and the international research community.
The Department of Information and Media Studies at Aarhus University's research in Information Studies includes historical, sociological, communicative, and design-oriented approaches to the study of the development and application of information technology on the level of individuals, organizations, and society.
The Department's research in Media Studies includes projects concerning production aesthetics, textual analysis, and reception within print media, radio, TV, film, and the Internet, as well as topics concerning the theory, policy, history, and institution of media. Between these two fields, where Information and Media studies increasingly meet, research is carried out in areas such as IT and Learning, the Internet, and Multimedia.
The University of Aarhus is located in the centre of the city, close to cafés, shops, streets and a busy and buzzing social life.
Eligibility
This program is open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students of any major at The University of Texas at Austin. Undergraduate applicants should have successfully completed a minimum of 60 credit hours and have a 3.0 GPA.
Courses and Credit
Courses relevant to media and information studies can be found in several departments at Aarhus University, and many of these and other courses are taught in English.
A three-week long pre-semester language and culture course, Denmark Today, is offered for exchange students. It is held every August and January prior to the beginning of the semester. The aim of the course is to provide participants with sufficient Danish language skills to communicate with fellow students and cope with everyday life in Århus. However, the course will not give the participant enough knowledge of Danish to match an academic working level. Students are also encouraged to take Danish language studies locally in order to improve their proficiency.
Accommodations
The Aarhus University International Secretariat offers exchange students assistance in finding a place to stay in Aarhus. Housing is guaranteed if you apply by the stipulated deadlines (usually around May 1 for Fall, and November 1 for spring).
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Students may use any federal, state, or institutional aid they would normally be awarded by the Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS), excluding work-study, to help pay for study abroad. Financial aid awards can also be recalculated to cover increased costs associated with study abroad. Additionally, most private scholarships are applicable to study abroad - however, students must confirm that with the donor. Learn more about funding for study abroad.
Travel grants are available from Aarhus University for exchange students from the U.S.A. The Travel Grant is a reimbursement up to 1,000 € for travel expenses.
